Hist/Bio Note

The Shepherd Initiative was founded in Columbus, Ohio in 1998 after the murder of Matthew Shepard, with the intent to advocate for Christian communities to include LGBTQ+ people and "[promote] informative dialogue on the compatibility of Christianity and homosexuality." To this end, the Initiative organized the Amazing Grace conference in 2000 and 2003, gathering Christian leaders of many denominations from across the U.S., all devoted to this cause. The nonprofit organization operated until its dissolution in 2008.
