James Toy was an early LGBT activist in Detroit and the University of Michigan. A pioneer in 1970, he declared himself an "open" gay male at a Detroit anti-war rally. That year, he and other students proposed the University of Michgan establish a unit to address the needs of gay and lesbian students. The following year he served as a member of the Episcopal diocesan commission on homosexuality; in 1975, he helped establish a Detroit area chapter of Integrity, an LGBT gay Episcopal organization. Since 1989, he has been a member of the diocese’s Task Force on Lesbian and Gay Men’s Concerns.
