Description

Records document the Church Council of Greater Seattle from its founding in 1919 through 2003. Also included are records of the state, regional, and national councils or other councils with which the Seattle council had close ties. Records include correspondence, minutes, speeches and writings, reports, statements, financial records, newsletters, news releases, scrapbooks, and ephemera. Among records are one series of approximately 1 cubic foot concerning lesbians and gay men dated from 1972-1989.

Hist/Bio Note

The Seattle Federation of Churches was founded in 1919, at a time when such ecumenical councils were being organized across the country and world wide. The constitution of the new federation stated as its purpose "to promote the welfare, comity and cooperation of the churches and to foster religious movements and Community betterment."
