Lutherans Concerned-San Francisco
Span Dates: 1974-1996
Volume: 4 cartons and 1 box
The Lutherans Concerned-San Francisco Records date from 1974 to 1996 and consist of 4 cartons and 1 box. The bulk of the collection consists of LC/SF 'master files,' which were arranged chronologically. These files contain a wide variety of materials, including administrative records, brochures, conference materials, correspondence, executive and steering committee's meeting minutes, financial records, mass mailings, materials related to the national organization, such as documents from the Lutherans Concerned/North America Assembly, membership materials, newsclippings, newsletters, and reports. Though there are records from 1989-1991, the master files from those years are missing. The collection also includes subject files related to AIDS and other organizations that deal with LGBT issues and religion, such as the Council on Religion and the Homosexual. There is also a videotape produced by the National Lutheran Christian Ministry and audio recordings of lectures, panels and keynote speeches from LC Assemblies.
The San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of Lutherans Concerned was organized in 1975, the year after the national parent organization. The chapter's goals were to educate the church about gays and lesbians, develop a theology that included people of various 'sexual life styles,' and create spiritual affirmation for gays and lesbians. See the website of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of Lutherans Concerned for historical details.
