Hist/Bio Note

The Reverend Doctor Edward W. Bauman was senior pastor at the progressive Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. from the early 1970s until 1992. On January 22, 1977, he preached what is now considered a prophetic sermon entitled “The Gay Life,” in which he called for greater sensitivity to the humanity and feelings of gay and lesbian people. In 1979, Foundry members joined Affirmation: United Methodists for Lesbian and Gay Concerns.
