Description

The Integrity Records collection has a rich concentration in the early history of the organization and includes minutes of meetings, correspondence, newsletters from regional and local chapters, and materials from various conventions and conferences.

Hist/Bio Note

In 1974, Episcopal activist Dr. Louie Crew announced a new publication, "INTEGRITY", and the first chapter meeting was held in Chicago. The next year the first convention was held in Chicago with Ellen Barrett and Jim Wickliff as co-presidents. In 1982, then President John Fortunato established a national office in Washington, DC. Integrity continued to press for full inclusion of LGBT members within the church. In 1989, the Rt. Rev. John S. Spong, Bishop of Newark, ordained the Rev. Robert Williams, an openly gay man living in a relationship with another man, to the priesthood. By the late 1990s, Integrity's efforts resulted in near full inclusion of LGBT peoples within the Episcopal Church USA. In 2003, General Conference approved an openly gay bishop amidst a storm of protest within the Anglican Church.
