Description
The Canon Jones Papers consist of minutes of meetings held between 1963 and 1982, reports, articles, annual reports, talks and newspaper clippings. Much of the correspondence consists of letters to and from Canon Clinton Jones. Among the correspondents are letters from Foster Gunnison Jr., a pioneer in the gay liberation movement. Mr. Gunnison headed the Institute of Social Ethics in Hartford. There are many letters from Alfred A. Gross, director of the George W. Henry Foundation in New York city. Materials about ERCHO (Eastern Regional Conference of Homophile Organizations) and NACHO (North American Conference of Homophile Organizations) are also present.
Hist/Bio Note
Clinton Robert Jones was born in 1916 in Manchester, Connecticut, and received a B.A. and DD from Bard College. He received a masters of divinity in 1941 from General Theological Seminary in New York. He served as curate, vicar, chaplain during his careen, and was acting canon of Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford, Connecticut from 1948 until his retirement in 1986. Jones' interest in the homophile began with his activities with the Committee on Sexual Minorities - Greater Hartford Council of Churches from 1964 to 1986. He served on the national Task Force on the Church and the Homophile of the house of Bisohops from 1972 to 1975 and chaired the Diocesan Committee on Human Sexuality from 1976 to 1983.
He wrote numerous books and articles on counselling and ministering to homosexuals from 1972 to 1987.
