This brief collection consists of correspondence and print ephemera as well as sermons and speaking engagements from 1990-1997, as well as earlier personal papers and audio tapes from Ruth Linscheid 6 Oct 2005. One box of correspondence, reports dated 1983-1994 will be closed until 2028.

Hist/Bio Note

John was born in 1953, to J. Willard and Ruth Linscheid. He received his M. Div. degree in 1980 from the Mennonite Biblical Seminary in Elkhart, Indiana. John came out to his family and a few friends in the late 1970s but remained publicly closeted; he was no longer eligible for ordination when he came out. In the early 1980s, John wrote a number of pro-gay articles for the Brethren Mennonite Council for Gay Concerns (BMC). From 1985-1990, John worked as an assistant editor at The Other Side magazine. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, John spoke frequently to churches, classes, and conferences about gay spiritual, political, and social experience. His was a leading voice in the Mennonite Church for LGBTQ inclusion.
