Description

The collection documents the work of Gladys Margaret Crane as a university professor in theatre and religious studies and her experience as a student at Washington State University, University of Indiana, and her late career degree from Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary at Northwestern University. It relates her involvement in the Lutheran church, the League of Women Voters of Wyoming, and other various organizations. It contains art, photographs, negatives, vital records, certificates, diplomas, diaries, notebooks, books, magazines, newspapers, pamphlets, brochures, newspaper clippings, class notes, teaching material, correspondence, manuscript materials, audiocassette tapes, VHS tapes, compact discs, microfilm, plaques, and memorabilia.

Hist/Bio Note

Gladys Crane(1928-2018) was born near Philadelphia and raised in Washington State. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in speech and theater from Washington State University and then obtained a master’s and Ph. D in theatre from Indiana University. She taught speech and theater at North Park College in Chicago, the University of Maine, Drew University in New Jersey, and then accepted a position at the University of Wyoming in 1967. While there, she taught theater classes, directed plays, and was involved in state, regional and national theatre organizations. She was the department head of theatre and dance for four years. Her research focused on the plays of George Bernard Shaw and she was considered by her colleagues as a Shaw scholar. In 1993, upon retirement from the University of Wyoming, she obtained a master’s of theological studies at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary at Northwestern Seminary. After receiving her master’s, she returned to the University of Wyoming to teach feminist theology, drama and religion, and gender and religion. Gladys Crane was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Laramie Wyoming and part of its committees, choir, and taught Sunday school. She was a member of the League of Women voters of Wyoming and was at one time, state president.
