Description
This collection consists of news articles, correspondence, and other personal papers centered on the social, legal and political issues of the LGBTQ community in the United States collected by Tom Miles. Material includes newspaper clippings showcasing the media representation of these issues, most notably from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, USA Today, the Riverfront Times, the Washington Post and The Advocate. Also included are full issues of Bondings, a publication dedicated to promoting positive relations between the Catholic Church and the LGBTQ community. Correspondence includes e-mails discussing the removal of a priest from Miles' church, as well as activism related to PFLAG and other LGBTQ organizations and causes
Hist/Bio Note
Born and raised in St. Louis, Tom Miles was an insurance broker and financial planner married to Audrey J. Miles (née Kunz), with whom he had six children. He was an active member of St. Cronan Catholic Church as well as the organization for Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG), both of which are reflected in the collection. Miles had a LGBTQ-identified daughter, which may have influenced his interest in LGBTQ issues
