Nicole Hamel estnée à Cap-rouge près de Québec. En 1968, après avoir obtenu un Baccalauréat en Catéchèse à l’Université Laval, Québec, elle s’est mariée à un homme qu’elle a profondément aimé.
De 1968 à 2001, pendant plus de trente ans elle a occupé diverses fonctions au sein de l'Église catholique: enseignement religieux, charge de cours à l’université Laval, animation pastorale scolaire, régionale et dans le domaine de la santé, en plus d’engagements bénévoles.
En 1989, elle a rencontré sa conjointe dont le pseudonyme est Judith alors qu’elles étaient toutes les deux mariées à un homme. Nicole et Judith sont toutes les deux mères de jeunes adultes. À cause de quelques personnes de leur entourage, elles ont traversé ensemble incompréhension, rejet, jugement et maladie. Nicole tient à dire que Judith l’a amoureusement accompagnée pendant un temps très éprouvant à la suite d’un cancer qui aurait pu l’emporter.
À la suite de cette maladie, dans le cadre d’un Diplôme deuxième cycle en Études féministes à l’Université Laval, elles ont complété une recherche, sur l’Église catholique et les lesbiennes au Québec. Ce qui les intéressait était le lien entre l’invisibilité de leur réalité et les conséquences sur leur santé physique, psychologique et spirituelle.
En 1999 leur recherche est devenue un livre: L’amour entre femmes dans l’Église catholique. Et ciel parlait, ce serait l’enfer? Cette publication leur a donné la possibilité de se dire et est pour elles une manifestation de la fécondité de leur couple.
En 2001, elle a quitté l’institution catholique en faveur d’une église chrétienne et protestante : l’Église unie du Canada, Elle a enfin trouvé un confort dans l'expression de sa foi, une place comme femme à part entière et la reconnaissance de sa vie de couple avec sa conjointe.
À cause de son changement d’appartenance chrétienne, Nicole a été congédiée. Elle était animatrice de pastorale auprès des malades dans un hôpital. Après 12 ans de vie commune, le 30 décembre 2004, Judith et Nicole ont confirmé leur union par un mariage civil et chrétien à l’Église unie St-Pierre, Québec.
Nicole a été cofondatrice ( 2004) du groupe interspirituel Spiritualité Entre nous, qui a rassemblé mensuellement des personnes gaies, lesbiennes et bisexuelles dans les locaux de l’Église unie St-Pierre, Québec pendant plus de 7 ans.
Nicole Hamel vient a publié un livre bilingue : Du caillou au séquoia. From Stone to Sequoia. Quand serrent les maux, Ed du mécène, 2007 sur sa traversée du cancer avec, comme toile de fond, sa réalité maternelle et la découverte de l’amour pour la femme avec qui elle partage sa vie. L'auteure a été semi finaliste pour le prix Igénie en 2009 et s'est méritée la double mention "créativité et inspiration". Le livre en couleurs est illustré de 40 peintures commentées.

Nicole Hamel wasborn in Cap-rouge near Quebec City. In 1968, upon graduating from Laval University in Catechism, she married a man whom she deeply loved.
For more than 30 years between 1968 and 2001, she had several functions within the Catholic Church: teacher of religious education, part-time lecturer at Laval University, group leaders in schools, at regional level as well as in hospitals, along with a number of volunteer commitments.
In 1989 she met her life partner – whose pseudonym is Judith – at a time when they were both married to a man. Nicole and Judith are both mothers of young adults. With some people in their family circle they have had to face together incomprehension, rejection, judgment and illness. Nicole insists that Judith shouldered her with love during very testing times following a cancer that could have been fatal.
Following this illness, within the scope of a postgraduate diploma in Feminist Studies at Laval University, they conducted a research on the Catholic Church and lesbians in Quebec. What interested them mostly was the connection between the invisibility of their reality and the consequences thereof on their physical, psychological and spiritual health.
Despite the suffering linked with social and religious pressure they have been through, Nicole and Judith sensed that their own experiences, along with that of other women they had met as part of their research, had great potential to help others. Since then they have found a network of men and women that are a great comfort to them.

In 2001, she left the Catholic Church in favour of a Christian Protestant Church, the United Church of Canada. She finally feels comfortable in the expression of her faith, has found a place as a fully-fledged female and where her life partner and relationship are recognised.

After having lived together for 12 years, Judith and Nicole sealed their union by a Christian and civil wedding at St. Peter’s United Church, Quebec City, on December 30, 2004.
Nicole co-founded (2004) a sharing group "Spiritualité Entre nous", which brought together gay, lesbian and bisexual people who were interested in spirituality. Nicole led that group more than 7 years at St. Peter’s United Church in Quebec City.
Nicole Hamel has published a bilingual book: "Du caillou au séquoia. From Stone to Sequoia. Quand serrent les maux," 2007 on her traverse of cancer with, as a backdrop, her reality as a mother and the discovery of her love for the woman who shares her life today.
