Hist/Bio Note
Minnesota Men of Color (MMC) was founded in 1998 by Nicholas Metcalf (also known by the name Cetanzi, meaning "Yellow Hawk"). Metcalf is a Souix two-spirit activist who was born and raised on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in North Dakota. After moving to Minnesota and working with the Indigenous Peoples Task Force, Metcalf recognized the need for support for LGBT people of color, specifically in relation to HIV/AIDS care and awareness. In 1997, they connected with other LGBT people of color in Minnesota and began to brainstorm an organization which would better serve the needs of people of color in the community. Other active members included Edd Lee, Roxanne Anderson, Dennis Anderson, Brandon Lacy Campos, Lupe Castillo, and Roderic Southall.
The organization was founded to “serve the Arab/Middle Eastern, Asian Pacific Islander, Chicano/Latino and Native American Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) population in the state of Minnesota.” MMC focused primarily on providing HIV and AIDS services, although they also hosted social events and promoted discussion of racial justice in the LGBT community at large. The organization ran several programs independently but cooperated with other organizations, such as the Minnesota Department of Health, the National Latino/a Lesbian And Gay Organization (LLEGÓ), and the Minnesota American Indian AIDS Task Force (MAIATF). MMC ceased operation in 2003 due to funding issues, but many of its members have since continued to do important work surrounding people of color in LGBT spaces in Minnesota.
